Luxe Gold
I had initially written an anguished post about the events that unfolded on Sunday morning in Orlando, but after reading it several times, I realized it just made me feel even sadder and more helpless. So instead, I’m going to publish the post that I had originally scheduled for this morning, and ask that if your heart is aching as mine has been to offer some kind of assistance to the victims and their families, please consider donating to the Pulse Victims Fund on GoFundMe, or visit this post on Strawberry Singh’s blog where she has graciously outlined various ways people can help. My heart, my thoughts, and all my love goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy. My dearest hope when we begin to rebuild and heal is that we can all unite around a common desire for peace, acceptance, respect, and equality. We won’t get there in a day, but in the words of Lao Tzu: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

There are only two days left to sign up for the June round of the Luxe Box (sign-ups close at 11:59pm SLT on June 14th), and I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts. I’m featuring one of the lovely items that came in May’s box, the Verna Dress by Tee*fy, which I really adore. It’s a simple design done exceptionally well, and I think that really exemplifies much of what we found in the inaugural Luxe Box. Nothing too fancy or thematic; just high quality, beautiful, easy-to-wear clothing with a value far beyond the initial sign-up cost of L$1000. (The box also contained a number of wonderful non-clothing items, but I will always personally get the most use out of wearables, so that’s what I’m focusing on where the value is concerned.)
The June round of the Luxe Box is L$1500, which means it increased in price by 50% over last month. Predictably, this caused some irritation amongst people in the Blueberry group, and I ended up turning off instant messaging in the group settings, because I just didn’t wish to see the complaints go further. The wonderful collective of designers behind the Luxe Box are happy to accept constructive comments and feedback; this actually led to a few designers graciously sending out updated items with more color options last month. But complaints over the unknown contents of the box prior to joining the group, and of course the cost to the end user, could have only been frustrating and discouraging for the designers and organizers to deal with. After all, potential consumers of the Luxe Box will assign value in different ways, and here is my mode of thinking:
I really adore the brand Blueberry, and if I had the funds, I would very likely buy and frequently wear about 75% of the items in their store. At Blueberry, fatpacks for newly-released items typically sell for around L$1299, and they are one of the brands that I believe have confirmed that they plan on providing full fatpacks in their Luxe Box offerings. So if there’s a 75% chance that the item that Blueberry includes in the Luxe Box is something I would happily buy for L$1299, then at the current purchase cost of L$1500, I’m only spending L$201 more for 11 additional items from the other participating designers, many of which are also brands I love. Sold!
If you’re new to the concept of the Luxe Box, or you’re still pondering whether to join for the next round, that would be my recommendation for assessing the value if you’re unsure about the cost. You might have a different favorite brand from the line-up (and you can always find out which designers are participating in the next round on the Luxe Box website), so use that favorite designer of yours as a jumping off point. But most importantly, have fun with it; remember that much of the delight in the subscription box model is the surprise factor, and the allure of the unknown. And it won’t be for everybody; just like I rarely play gachas, some people aren’t particularly keen on winding up with inventory items they may never use.
But there’s also terrific news for those who prefer to wait and see what a box contained: all previously-released Luxe Boxes are available to purchase at the in-world location beginning on the 1st of every month. You must join the Luxe Box group to be able to purchase them, and they will cost L$2000 above and beyond the group joining fee. (Ex: If you’re interested in purchasing the May 2016 box, you will need to join the June Luxe Box group for L$1500, visit the in-world boutique, and purchase the May box for L$2000.) It’s clearly much more economical to just join the group each month and get the box at its lowest going rate, but if you happen to miss one, I think it’s brilliant that this second-chance option is being provided.
So are you going to be receiving the June Luxe Box? What did you think of the May offerings? I’d love to know your thoughts! ♡

I think you make such a great point about Luxe box… and spending in SL in general. One of the things people often forget about SL when they argue that it is “just a game I don’t want to pay” is that games… well… they cost money. Look at the market. PC games usually have online subscription fees, start up fees etc. And there are designers who spend countless hours (and huge creative talent) making beautiful content for Second Life consumers… and for some, this is their real life living. Before complaining about the cost of gifts, it’s important to note these things I think and give kudos where kudos is due. Designers really are *very* generous when they provide Second Life users gifts. Period. We should be saying “thank you.” ♥

Your words are so thoughtful and raise wonderful points, Astrid! It’s a really interesting idea to think of the Luxe Box as being more of a “gift” than a direct purchase, because it’s true: unless we peek at the first unboxing or review blogs/videos that get posted, when we receive those HUDs, it really is like opening a parcel of gifts from some amazing designers. I personally having a price point at which I would not feel comfortable buying the Luxe Box, but we don’t seem likely to reach it, unless the designers grow weary of increasing complaints. I hope those will fall away over time though. We’re only one month in, so it’s early yet, but I’m really pleased thus far and can’t wait to see what June’s beautiful box brings! ♥

Yay! Gotta love the Luxe Boxes! I unfortunately can’t afford to get one this month (yeah you know where my money went, stupid fancy skydome! Lol) but I will definitely get the July one if I can. You look awesome in that Tee*fy dress though can I can’t wait to see you rock all of the LB June releases! Love you bb ♥

Awwww, bae! Tell you what: you come over to my skybubble and I’ll put on a fancy fashion show for you. And I’ll keep hitting that “show all” button in the Maitreya HUD so you get to see flashes of my bits in-between. ;) Seriously tho, if you ever get tired of renting, you know you’re always welcome to crash at my teeny parcel. But NO BREAKING THE DOME this time, woman! I know it was you and your shenanigans what done it. Although the idea that I literally fell through the floor and plummeted to my metaphorical death the first time I tried to hug you will never stop being absolutely hilarious to me. So thank you for destroying my home with your hotness, you troublemaker! ♥

Hi, Ever great post.
I did the Luxe box, last time, but I’m not going to this time. Here’s my reasoning:
1. It’s not shopping. I like to shop and choose. That’s a big part of the fun for me in SL – going shopping. At 1000L it was still a little pricey for me, but at 1500L it’s beginning to cut too deeply into my monthly shopping budget.
2. Some of the designers aren’t to my tastes, so it feels as if some of my money goes to waste.
3. Some of the designers are to my tastes, but I don’t have any use for the stuff I got – I don’t need the dog or the house or the bed. They’re all really nice items, just don’t have a use for them. Well, I did use them in two photos, so maybe I do. : )
4. The Magika hair wasn’t quite exclusive, not in the sense I would have thought. Magika released their Luxe hair to everyone, just not in the colors that were in the Luxe box. I ended up buying it twice, since I wanted the style in a single tone (The hair in the box is two tones.).
So now I’m wondering if I just wait, will I be able to buy the “exclusive” items I want, individually.
5. It’s a grab bag. Even among the designers I like, I got one item that I was very disappointed with. No need to point out who, since it was simply something not to my tastes. It was perfectly fine; I just wouldn’t wear it.
Having said all this, I do want to point out that everything in the Luxe box was high-quality. I think the designers did a great job and some gave people more than their money’s worth. The dresses came in multiple patterns and colors, for instance. I felt the Scarlett Creative house was really well done, the Tee*fy dress is* gorgeous, and I wear the Blueberry bustier all the time (Also in another one of my photos. Hah, maybe I should reconsider buying the box this time after all.).
It’s a bargain at 1000L. It’s still worth it at 1500L, but for me at that price it’s starting to eat into my shopping budget too much. That would reduce my shopping time in SL which is a big part of the fun for me.
So this time I’m going to pass.

Your comment is so wonderfully thoughtful and insightful, I truly appreciate that you took the time to share it, Myra! It’s definitely awesome food for thought for anyone considering the box this time around, or in the future.
To your points, I’m the same: as lovely as some of the items were, if they weren’t wearables, unfortunately I would not be able to make much use of them. And you’re right, some of the clothing options, even from beloved brands, may not have necessarily been to our taste. For me, I get the enjoyment of the surprise and the pleasure of supporting an interesting concept, and since I rarely play gachas, it’s really the only “game of chance” shopping experience I’ve gotten into. But there will certainly be a point at which it affects the shopping budget too much, and like yourself, I enjoy shopping around at various stores and events too, and that would be something I’d miss if more designers went to the HUD delivery system.
It’s all about balance, right? :) I’ll try to feature more items from the June box on my blog (time always seems to get away from me), and within a few days we should know what the July box is expected to cost. I can’t wait till the 15th! ♥
