My friends, I sense a disturbance in the force. The “force” being our virtual budgets, that is, and the “disturbance” being a clear conspiracy by several of the grid’s most beloved brands to divest us of all of our monies. Designers and creators, I’m totally onto you! ♥
But first, a personal reflection. My mom and I are a lot alike: tall and sassy dames with bawdy senses of humor; quick to laugh and with a great affection for making people smile. But there’s a place where our paths diverge sharply, one which has caused people to joke that despite our physical and personality similarities, we can’t possibly be related. Because you see, my mom adores accessories. Shoes, handbags, necklaces, rings, really all manner of shiny things! Jewelry is her absolute favorite; she buys it, she makes it, she even sells some on the side. But me? I have like 7 pairs of shoes and one purse to my name. And – much to my amusement and delight – it confounds and frustrates the family’s matriarch to no end.
Mom would be pleased to know that my virtual world counterpart is much more accessorized than the RL me – and happily so! But as much as pixel jewels and footwear are a pleasure, my true weakness in Second Life are hairstyles. I believe the first real virtual dollars I spent a few weeks ago were on joining the VIP groups for Little Bones and Moon, and I’ve been delightedly collecting group gifts from many brands and lusting over the new hair releases I keep spying on Flickr.
Here’s where the conspiracy theory kicks in: no less than three beloved hair designers are simultaneously having massive summer sales right now! Shine on me, Lottery Gods: I know I never remember to buy a ticket, but I could really use a cashalicious windfall! :D
And if that wasn’t wonderful enough, we have the amazing Hair Fair 2015 to look forward to, kicking off on July 11th. So much excitement! And in case you haven’t heard, there are two wonderful ways that you can contribute to this event before opening day:
❖ The Hair Fair Photo Contest invites participants to take pictures of themselves wearing a favorite hairstyle from one of the looooong list of prize sponsors, and then share it in the official Photo Contest group on Flickr. You can submit up to five photos (all must be new), and the prizes on offer are spectacular. Don’t miss out!
❖ And for those wonderful creators amongst us, a complimentary Bandana Day Kit is provided by Sasy Scarborough and Whimsy Winx, allowing residents to create and sell customized bandanas on the final day of the Hair Fair in order to benefit Wigs for Kids. It’s a wonderful sentiment and gesture, and a lovely way to show your creativity. Please click here for all the details!

There’s an absolutely lovely series of videos making the rounds called “What Second Life Means to Me”, in honor of the virtual world’s 12th birthday. Linden Lab has invited participants to share their videos, and it’s turning into a really heartwarming project thus far.
Having absolutely no machinma or video-making prowess of my own, I favor written words flavored by photos, and of late I’ve become absolutely enraptured with Second Life photography. I can easily spend hours multi-tasking my day away, working in one window and surreptitiously browsing Flickr in the other, delighted and awed by the picture shares of my fellow Second Life residents. And whilst exploring SL always remains close to my heart, and I plan to engage in much more of it soon, the allure of pixel pretties inspire something inside me that brings me right back to my youth.
Fashion dolls were a spendy prospect when I was growing up, and in her wisdom, my mom noticed that I loved the Jem cartoons and figured a Jem doll was a perfect compromise. I loved that doll tremendously: she was larger than Barbie, both in height and proportions, which mirrored my own extra-leggy stature. She also had LED flashing earrings, that remarkably never stopped twinkling even if I left them going for
days weeks months at a stretch. But she also fostered my creativity, because unlike Barbie, Jem didn’t have a bevy of outfits and accessories to her name. So I had to fashion them out of scraps of material, haphazard crocheting, and a whole lot of ingenuity.
In Second Life, we have exceptionally talented designers who – literally and figuratively – fashion amazing creations for the “dress up dolls” that are our virtual selves. And while engaging in the world of Second Life fashion is by no means necessary to have a rewarding and satisfying in-world experience, it’s something I personally really enjoy, and I feel blessed and honored to be part of the blogging community who also embrace and celebrate their love of pixel fashion. And here I’d like to give a special shout-out to Cherri Banks of Elysium Cabaret, who is so exceptionally lovely and generous. You helped me tremendously with figuring out appliers for my new and beloved mesh body, and I can’t thank you enough for your kindness! <3
My look today is wonderfully easy and effortless (thanks to Cherri’s applier tutelage!) and is top-to-toe db Dollz exclusives from the Ross Fair Event, which is gracing the grid through July 6th. I can’t tell you how lush and sexy my body feels in these jeans! And I’m absolutely thrilled to have learned about appliers, as one of the reasons why I initially hesitated to try a mesh body was because I’ve always loved system layer jeans and how perfectly they tuck into boots. So when I discovered that appliers work similarly to system layers, I was over the moon. Content creators, you are absolute geniuses!
Oh! And a quick note about my shoes: they’re made for Slink flat feet, but are unrigged so they work perfectly with my Maitreya feet as well. And who doesn’t love a great pair of sneaks to kick around in? Also want to mention that my hair is courtesy of Truth‘s wonderful L$50 sale, which was recently updated to include even more hair packs. I think the count is close to 200 styles being offered in the sale room (back of the in-world store), and I’m unsure of the end date so go-go-go before you miss out on the amazing deals!

When I was around 12 or so, my mom surprised me by purchasing an shabby, well-loved upright piano from a local seller in the newspaper. It arrived by the grace of a moving truck and the combined efforts of several people, and I remember feeling rich for the first time in my life. Though it had only cost a nominal $50 or so – the family really just wanted the convenience of having someone else move it from their home – to me it felt like a luxury, almost a monument. That piano had substance and took up space in the world; it was an instrument of creation and creativity, and it became the one thing in the world that felt like it was mine alone.
Mom signed me up for the most affordable lessons we could find; $8 paid to a fading jazz pianist at a local music store who started me down the same staid path that every dutiful young student was expected to take. But I was a cherry-topped chanteuse who fancied herself to be the next Tori Amos, all passion mixed with fiery angst, and none of this “First Year Piano for Beginners” nonsense. My interest in music waxed as the lessons waned, and for hours I sat pressed with my ear against a boombox balanced precariously upon the piano ledge, picking out Tori tunes by ear and belting them out with equal fervor.
We lost the piano when I was 15 and had to move, and I was heartbroken. I’d sneak into abandoned practice rooms at my high school and college, playing from ear and memory, but it was never quite the same. To this day, any time I come across a shabby old upright, faded with the patina of time and players past, I grow wistful with fond, faraway childhood memories. My heartfelt thanks to Asa Vordun and her gorgeous L’Arc en Ciel region for giving me a moment’s repose to lose myself in lovely thoughts once more.
I’m honored to have been invited to blog for My Closet, My Choice Store (MMC), and I paired the sleek and wonderfully fitted Vany Pants with the Sara Sweatshirt, a VIP group gift from Suicidal Unborn. Shae showed off the Kitty version of the sweatshirt last month – in fact, I think she may have been wearing it when we bumped into each-other on the grid for the first time! – and when I picked it up, I was thrilled to find the gorgeous galaxy print in the HUD.
MMC’s unisex Real Collection Glasses were just what I needed to shield me from the gloriously setting sun at L’Arc, and they can be found either as a group gift or for only L$1 on the Marketplace. I’m so happy when creators offer their group gifts on the MP; it’s a wonderful kindness for those who may be out of group space but would still like to sample a brand’s products.
Quality shoes for system feet are difficult to come by these days, so when I spied the indigo pumps with a soft dapple of stars in the I’m a Blue Princess outfit at Cotton Candy Monster, I had to snatch them up! I was at the store tagging a Midnight Mania board on the suggestion of a member of the SL Frees & Offers group, and was dazzled at the kawaii clothing and incredibly affordable prices at CCM. Lots of lovely items to be found there!

In my recent post about the lovely Trancescending Chill Garden, I mentioned that I found myself at the Poesie sim by lucky happenstance. But perhaps it would be more accurate to say that I was actually pose-essed to go there! ;)
Having a diverse collection of poses on hand is essential for Second Life bloggers and photographers alike, and my ongoing desire for affordable options found me browsing through pose packs on the SL Marketplace. That’s when I stumbled across Verocity Poses, and was amazed at the selection of high quality, unique and attractive pose sets for only L$1 apiece. At last check, there were 55 discounted listings! Verocity Poses @ SL Marketplace
I decided to stop by their in-world store to see if there were additional sets on clearance (it appears the ones in-world match the Marketplace store), and that’s how I came to be at Poesie, where Verocity is Trancescending’s next-door neighbor. Theirs is a lovely parcel split into several outdoor areas with singles poses and props; poseballs for couples and groups; Gacha machines, and more. The sale-price pose sets can all be found in the marked Discount section.

While exploring Verocity, I took a moment to snap photos of my recent purchases from The Wash Heat Wave Event. Today is the final day of this awesome sale, where virtually everything is L$10 from a wide variety of designers. I picked up the lovely Ella Skin there, as well as the colorful Indian Summer Choli Top by Anachron and summery Eyelet Skirt by Sn@tch. The wonderfully low prices aside, I really appreciate this event for all the new designers it introduced me to. I believe The Wash has events several times a year, so I’ll be eagerly looking forward to their next sim-wide sale!
After shopping at Verocity, I couldn’t resist peeking in over at Trancesending Chill Garden, and was delighted to see owner Pixie Marenwolf in residence. She’s absolutely lovely, and she mentioned that this past weekend she was unable to hold their usual event, but that Trancescending’s sky stage usually features live music from 4pm to midnight SLT on Sundays, so it’s well worth a visit if you enjoy uplifting, energetic electronica!
For now though, I believe I’ll just fold myself into a thoughtful pose and enjoy the warming rays of a late Springtime afternoon. <3
