Hunting for Pearls

Less than a week until Summer makes its debut in the Northern Hemisphere, and doesn’t it feel like it’s been here for ages already? My dear friend Noir has an especial fondness for wintery weather in Second Life (and she photographs it beautifully too), but I’ve always been drawn to the beaches and bodies of water in our virtual world. I think it’s the landlocked damsel in RL distress who craves that saltwater air and toes in the sand that I haven’t felt for so very long. So when I heard about the Tropical Summer Fair, you know I made it my mission to visit!

It’s a truly expansive shopping event with so much to see, but I found my favorite items a few footfalls from the landing zone at Mon Cheri; the beautifully designed Vegas Bikini takes full advantage of Advanced Lighting and has a wonderfully luminous shine. It matches perfectly with the Mon Cheri Twisted Body Chain, as well as the lustrous Metallic Floral Tattoo by Izzie’s, found at the June round of Uber. I’m celebrating event finds in this post for sure, and they both wrap up soon, so don’t miss out! ♡

I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl

If you made me name just one thing I loved in Second Life (and please don’t make me, that would be impossibly wicked!) I would unquestionably have one-piece outfits on my short list. Whether we call them jumpsuits, rompers, or playsuits, they are just so easy to wear and always get me going in a flash– usually to the latest shopping event, where I’ll most certainly be found picking up demos for even more of these wonderful things to add to my wardrobe!

But – and I pause to take a deep breath here – I may have found the be all, end all romper in CandyDoll‘s Leilani, because you can customize the top and bottom (separately if you like), as well as the gorgeous lace detailing, and the fatpack HUD comes with so many patterns and colors, it’s dizzying and delirious-making, and I couldn’t be happier to be so spoiled for choice!

I’m also quietly mesmerized by the new Jaily hairstyle from EMO-tions for the Hairology event. It’s so beautifully vintage glam, yet still with a modern ease and sensuality about it. As I posed for this picture at the wonderfully picturesque Blithe sim, I couldn’t help softly singing torch songs to myself from the ultimate vintage (and timeless) chanteuse, Nina Simone. Because after all: no matter how lovely the outfit, sometimes a woman just wants a little steam on her clothes. ;)

Walking on the Sand

The other day whilst enjoying some Flickr browsing (such a lovely way to bliss out, enjoying the amazing and inspiring virtual world photography shared there), I happened upon a picture by my friend Brandon which was accompanied by a song in the description. You find this quite often on Flickr, and I don’t always click but something sparked my curiosity, and I really enjoyed the song he linked to. Later, seeing another picture where his song was by an artist we both like, I cheekily hinted about the potential for photo inspired by a tune she had covered. He met the challenge brilliantly, and it really motivated me to try something similar.

The lovely Sand Dunes sim provided a perfect backdrop for my photos, which were inspired by the song linked below them. I think I may start looking to my music library for inspiration more often, as I’ve really been immersed in music lately, rotating between Spotify, Google Play Music, 8tracks and Songza. Always on the lookout for the ideal streaming music service that provides an extensive library of music, as well as awesome curated playlists and radio stations that populate music based on a song or artist seed. (Pandora is wonderful, but those skip limits just kill me!) If you have a favorite, I’d love to know in the comments! ♥

In a World of Pure Imeshination …

Happy almost weekend, my loves! It’s been a whirlwind of a week, made all the more exciting for me because I took the plunge and bought the Maitreya Lara mesh body. Happiness, you are made of lush limbs and rounded curves! Not having to try and smooth out the odd planes and angles of the system avatar body in photographs is wonderful. Now I can spend the extra time playing with Windlights instead. The virtual world can be so vibrant and beautiful!

I demoed the Lara body for a day or so, and I had contemplated giving the Slink body a try as well, but the hands and feet are sold separately so it would have been a considerably more costly investment (although the sheer amount of shoes available for Slink feet is seriously impressive!)

The roster of designers who work with the Maitreya body isn’t quite so expansive yet, but it will likely grow as time goes on and updates are released. In the meantime, the wonderful Raznay published her Epic List of designers who offer Maitreya-compatible clothing, footwear, and more. I went with a super low-cost look that shows a lot of luscious skin, and I can’t wait to find some affordable applier bikinis for my summertime beachy adventures. The exceptionally beautiful Just Another Tequila Sunrise region is my backdrop today, and has so many beautiful vistas to photograph and explore! Definitely planning to visit again soon and write a proper destination post. So many wonders of the virtual world, so little time. And there’s a more pressing matter: I have only one pair of Maitreya-compatible shoes to my name, and that will never do!

Finally, a shout-out to Infected for the gorgeous Dragon Tattoo sleeves I snagged at their in-world store. I’m absolutely in love with the colors! It seems like colorful applier tattoos are far more rare than their monotone varieties, but I’m hopeful that there will be some excellent treasures to be found in the upcoming Body Art Hunt, which launches on July 1st. Looking forward to it!

Welcome to the Jungle: Second Life’s 12th Anniversary Premium Regions

Some of the loveliest people I’ve met in my 2nd Second Life journeys are from Australia, and I frequently marvel at how adept they and residents from around the world are at figuring out the time zone disparities when it comes to SL events. Second Life server time is the equivalent of Pacific Daylight Time in the United States, and many in-world events are timed to correspond with typical US work and leisure schedules so they can attract the biggest audience possible. Now you would think that someone such as myself, who happens to live in a place that syncs up with SLT, would be killin’ it with all my event attendance and time-sensitive deals, but that would be a logical and rational assumption, silly!

After reading all about the surreal experience of the LL gathering at Basilique, I really wanted to attend the next one, but y’know, life and stuff. /me sighs. I’ve also been sleeping really poorly lately, snatching cat naps here and there and working altogether too much for anyone’s good. So if someone would kindly clone themselves to my likeness and take care of all the day-to-day drudgery for me so I can enjoy my 2nd Second Life, I would be tremendously grateful! At this point, I’ll even take a trio of kitty cats standing atop each-other’s shoulders, draped in a trench coat and ginger wig. Hey, beggers can’t be choosers! ;)

Since I couldn’t make it to the LL Premium Member meet-up on Thursday, here are some excellent blog posts about the event and the special event area: Tymmerie Thorne, Inara Pey, Ziggy Starsmith, Markham Weatherwax. Interestingly, the SL Premium Coast regions are still open to the public (presumably they’ll be closed after the SL12B Celebration), so I sneaked over this weekend to take a look around.

My first stop was the crocodile wrasslin’ pit, because of course it would be. What else does one do at a deserted SL jungle-beach? I gave it a valiant effort, but after amassing approximately 17 pairs of prim crutches, I determined that victory was not to be mine. I’ll get you next time, Crocky McNibbles!

I’ve made a huge mistake.

The SL Premium Coast areas are split across two regions, which Inara notes was a very smart move on the Lab’s part to help ease lag during the meet-up. There’s are beach and bar areas, and various scenic spots for relaxing if you cam up into the jungle. Flying is disabled on both regions, but you may either use the Fly Override setting (found in the Advanced menu of the Firestorm viewer), or you can port around quickly by locating cushions and seating areas and choosing the “Sit Here” option from the right-click menu. As long as you’re clicking on a seat-enabled item within the same region, it should get you from place to place very quickly. That’s how I found myself on a lovely sunbeam-lit jungle pathway, climbing upward toward the curiously crumbling ruins.

While I had an enjoyable time peeking and poking around the SL Premium Coasts, the builds felt rather primitive, both literally and figuratively. There was mesh to be found here and there, but many of the items and objects were old-school prims and sculpties, and the animals had very rudimentary animations. Still, I found this to be charming and authentic in a way; it reminded me of Learning Island and the sort of vintage SL style that I associate with the in-world building and modeling tools. These aren’t slick regions by any stretch, but they still offer some pretty vistas for photography and general sight-seeing.

Linden Lab also sent out an email recently offering an incentive on Premium Memberships: 50% off for new subscribers, limited to the first billing period of the quarterly membership plan. As I wrote in my recent post, Second Life Premium Membership and Value in the Virtual World, I genuinely feel that the annual billing option is the preferred way to go, as it really is an exceptional value when you factor in the price break for yearly memberships and the amount of in-world currency that’s rewarded over 52 weeks. Still, this incentive would be a great way for new residents to try out the SL Premium benefits and determine if springing for a longer membership is worthwhile. The promo runs through Monday, June 29th!
