Heart Hope

Posted on

There’s a beautiful collaboration threading its way through Flickr at the moment, created and curated by my always thoughtful and tremendously artistic friend GoodCross, on behalf of the White Canvas Gallery. It’s called the I Stand For Peace Challenge, and its aim is to “disown the mindless violence around us, and do something about it as artists”.

I have to be vulnerable for a moment and confess in honesty that when I first learned of this wonderful challenge, my heart just wasn’t in the right place to participate. I don’t mean from an ideological standpoint; I think the world of GC’s intentions, and I’m a passionate advocate for peace, equality, and freedom in all its myriad forms. But rather, in the days since my last post, SLife has been a riotous roller coaster of marvelous highs and melancholy lows. Everything from spontaneously spiriting around the course at Relay For Life whilst performing a choreographed pom-pom dance with two of my dear friends, tears of joyful laughter blurring my vision as we lag-looped our way through the connected regions … to finding myself once more in tears of a far more somber sort, deeply akin to those I wrote about several days ago.

But clouds, as they gracefully do, started to gently lift, and a bright parhelion began shining in my direction. Several of them, actually, in the form of nominations to participate in this challenge. And I realized that I was being indulgent and selfish in my sadness, and that’s so uncharacteristic of the beautifully collaborative nature of SL. One of Linden Lab’s original slogans was “Your World, Your Imagination”, and that always resonated so deeply with me, because the “your” in this case can be both singular and collective, and often times our community comes together in incredibly thoughtful, poignant ways. From supporting a virtual world designer who’s facing a health crisis, to fundraising for a tragedy like the Pulse Nightclub shooting, SL residents have always had a profound desire to support and inspire, to pay it forward and pledge solidarity for a worthwhile cause.

And because the universe works in brilliantly thoughtful ways, when I was contemplating what kind of picture to take, this song came on my SL playlist and its symbolism aligned perfectly with my thoughts in more ways than one. When it comes to peace, whether inward or as a greater hope, I always return to one of my touchstones, Joseph Campbell’s teaching: “follow your bliss”. I truly believe that if we all followed this simple but tremendously profound philosophy, peace would prosper because genuine bliss never creates divisions, strife, feelings of lack, or unworthiness. If we could all just express heartfelt love, appreciation, gratitude, and respect for each-other, we would do just as GoodCross yearns and all be united in every world and reality.

It’s a beautiful hope to hold onto; hope is so essential and a truly enlightened state of grace. So until that hope becomes a reality, I stand for peace. And it’s my dearest wish that you will too. ♡

“Cause I need something more than everything
A higher self deep within
And I know, we need a little heart hope
I know we’ve gotta outgrow, and feel a little heart hope
Cause there is something more than everything
So feel the love and let it in
Cause I know, we need a little heart hope …”

I had initially written an anguished post about the events that unfolded on Sunday morning in Orlando, but after reading it several times, I realized it just made me feel even sadder and more helpless. So instead, I’m going to publish the post that I had originally scheduled for this morning, and ask that if your heart is aching as mine has been to offer some kind of assistance to the victims and their families, please consider donating to the Pulse Victims Fund on GoFundMe, or visit this post on Strawberry Singh’s blog where she has graciously outlined various ways people can help. My heart, my thoughts, and all my love goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy. My dearest hope when we begin to rebuild and heal is that we can all unite around a common desire for peace, acceptance, respect, and equality. We won’t get there in a day, but in the words of Lao Tzu: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

There are only two days left to sign up for the June round of the Luxe Box (sign-ups close at 11:59pm SLT on June 14th), and I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts. I’m featuring one of the lovely items that came in May’s box, the Verna Dress by Tee*fy, which I really adore. It’s a simple design done exceptionally well, and I think that really exemplifies much of what we found in the inaugural Luxe Box. Nothing too fancy or thematic; just high quality, beautiful, easy-to-wear clothing with a value far beyond the initial sign-up cost of L$1000. (The box also contained a number of wonderful non-clothing items, but I will always personally get the most use out of wearables, so that’s what I’m focusing on where the value is concerned.)

The June round of the Luxe Box is L$1500, which means it increased in price by 50% over last month. Predictably, this caused some irritation amongst people in the Blueberry group, and I ended up turning off instant messaging in the group settings, because I just didn’t wish to see the complaints go further. The wonderful collective of designers behind the Luxe Box are happy to accept constructive comments and feedback; this actually led to a few designers graciously sending out updated items with more color options last month. But complaints over the unknown contents of the box prior to joining the group, and of course the cost to the end user, could have only been frustrating and discouraging for the designers and organizers to deal with. After all, potential consumers of the Luxe Box will assign value in different ways, and here is my mode of thinking:

I really adore the brand Blueberry, and if I had the funds, I would very likely buy and frequently wear about 75% of the items in their store. At Blueberry, fatpacks for newly-released items typically sell for around L$1299, and they are one of the brands that I believe have confirmed that they plan on providing full fatpacks in their Luxe Box offerings. So if there’s a 75% chance that the item that Blueberry includes in the Luxe Box is something I would happily buy for L$1299, then at the current purchase cost of L$1500, I’m only spending L$201 more for 11 additional items from the other participating designers, many of which are also brands I love. Sold!

If you’re new to the concept of the Luxe Box, or you’re still pondering whether to join for the next round, that would be my recommendation for assessing the value if you’re unsure about the cost. You might have a different favorite brand from the line-up (and you can always find out which designers are participating in the next round on the Luxe Box website), so use that favorite designer of yours as a jumping off point. But most importantly, have fun with it; remember that much of the delight in the subscription box model is the surprise factor, and the allure of the unknown. And it won’t be for everybody; just like I rarely play gachas, some people aren’t particularly keen on winding up with inventory items they may never use.

But there’s also terrific news for those who prefer to wait and see what a box contained: all previously-released Luxe Boxes are available to purchase at the in-world location beginning on the 1st of every month. You must join the Luxe Box group to be able to purchase them, and they will cost L$2000 above and beyond the group joining fee. (Ex: If you’re interested in purchasing the May 2016 box, you will need to join the June Luxe Box group for L$1500, visit the in-world boutique, and purchase the May box for L$2000.) It’s clearly much more economical to just join the group each month and get the box at its lowest going rate, but if you happen to miss one, I think it’s brilliant that this second-chance option is being provided.

So are you going to be receiving the June Luxe Box? What did you think of the May offerings? I’d love to know your thoughts! ♡

One of the many things I had always longed to do in Second Life was to visit Elysion, a deliciously named sim with a mythical (in my own mind) presence on the grid. Its Places listing has a wonderful come hither vibe, promising a “lush adult environment catering to the sensual and artistic side of your second life.” To say I found it alluring and intriguing is wildly understated!

Friends and loved ones from my First Life know me fondly as one with a fascination with the sensual and evocative, the artistic and the epicurean. But this facet isn’t something I’ve yet delved and dwelled within on the grid, as my naturally shy and quiet nature often turns me away from curiosity and toward the safe, the familiar. But I feel a keen desire to expand my horizons this time around, so with a tiny flutter in my belly, I landed at Elysion, paid the group enrollment fee for sim access (L$650 at the time of this writing), and slowly began to explore.

I’m delighted to say that the people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting at Elysion (as well as at at Blithe, a kindred sim that also requires group membership), have been wonderfully interesting and thoughtful encounters. And it makes for a very welcome reminder for me: always keep an open mind and heart. You’ll never stop being fascinated and amazed at what flows in. ♡

A New Dawn, A New Day

Posted on Updated on

Well hello again, you! ♡

In a wonderful twist of happenstance, it’s been almost exactly one year since I began my Happily Ever Afterr blog, and after an unexpected (but much-needed) hiatus, I’m overjoyed to be writing about the virtual world again. Did you miss me, SL? I certainly missed you!

The other day, I was listening to the song “Feeling Good” by the luminous Nina Simone, and it was so apt for how I was feeling in that moment in time: happy and serene, full of appreciation, and in essence, genuinely “feeling good”. That song, and my invigorated spirit, was just the spark I needed to feel compelled to rediscover my Second Life once more.

As you may notice, along with my uplifted effervescence, my look has also been updated! I had resisted mesh heads last year, fearing that they may somewhat hinder the wearer’s unique spirit and style, but it’s amazing how much changes in 7 months’ time. There are so many varieties and options for mesh heads, that I was dazzled for choice and had great fun trying on many demos and styles. In the end, it was Melissa by Genesis Lab that stole my heart, and felt wholly – and uniquely – like “me”.

In other news, I’ve been joyfully indulging in my wanderlust, traversing the grid on a quest for picturesque sights and hidden gems. With Project Sansar aiming to launch later this year, I had the lovely idea to create a bit of a Second Life time capsule via photography, sharing the destinations on Flickr for other avid virtual world wanderers to explore. It’s been a tremendously enjoyable journey thus far, and I hope you’ll join me on “Ever’s Quest” over on Flickr to see which destinations, both well-loved and lesser-known, are yours for the exploring!

It’s my hope that I’ll be able to post here on my blog at least twice a week, when time graciously allows. So until next time, dear reader: thank you so much for continuing to peek at my blog; it means the world to me that you care. Lots of love to you! ♡

Summertime, you are a tricky beast! No sooner had I started pining for Autumn when a lovely bundle of swimsuits came my way, and with a click of an applier button, I fell in love with the summery weather once more. Also, what better way to show off a lovely new tattoo than while wearing not very much at all? And any excuse I may find to visit one of my favorite sims is a truly worthwhile one, I’d say. So strike up “Summer Lovin'”, because it’s back to the beach with me!

First and foremost, I want to mention this gorgeous White Widow tattoo, which is a Gold level prize from The Collection, the brand new interactive adventure game from MadPea. You will become the main character in a quest that will lead you to a bevy of hidden treasures, following the clues and solving the puzzles you encounter in order to progress. It’s deeper than a traditional point-and-click game, and far more than just a hunt. The Collection has deeply immersive story and a truly unique style, so I highly recommend visiting the MadPea Games website to learn more about how to get started with this not-to-be-missed event!

In shopping event exclusives, I’m wearing the beautifully hand-drawn Giselle II Bikini by alaskametro<3, which may be found at the current round of AnyBody along side my fabulous lipstick by Nova Bodyshop. Over at the WearHouse event, you’ll find the gorgeous Ginger hairstyle by Tukinowaguma – a true bombshell style with an exceptional number of choices in the color HUDs – as well as an excellent and versatile pose set by Agapee.

I also want to give a special mention to my Chevron Necklace by Paper Arrow, which is the first piece of jewelry I’ve personally seen that features a specialized mesh body fit. I’m wearing the Maitreya (Beta) fit, and it may just be the first necklace I’ve ever worn in Second Life that did not have to be adjusted or resized in some fashion. So awesome! It fits beautifully against the skin with applier clothing, and works with mesh tops as well. A fitted version for Belleza’s Isis body is also included.

I hope you’re having a wonderful week so far, and please do check out The Collection by MadPea; it promises to be a thrilling and rewarding way to enjoy a whole new aspect of Second Life, and the prizes on offer in the Silver and Gold packages are wonderful. See you there! ♥
